Ira Manesse was a trained artist and devoted educator. Raised in poverty and neglect his childhood was far from ideal. In his daily life Manesse was able to overcome the challenges he faced as a child and young man. Manesse was a loving and gentle husband and father. However, he was never truly able to escape his past. His rough start in life haunted him and can be seen in the edginess of his work.
A prolific artist, Manesse's works include paintings, drawings, sculptures, and pottery. His paintings are primarily acrylics on canvas with some mixed medium, and his drawings are mostly charcoal on paper. Influenced by Goya, Rembrandt, Grosz, Kollwitz, Bosch and others many of his works portray the darker sides of our society and psyches.
